Trauma Therapy Approaches

Trauma does not only live in memory. It can shape how we experience our bodies, relationships, and sense of safety in the world. Many trauma-informed therapies work with both the mind and the nervous system to help people process difficult experiences, reconnect with their internal signals, and restore a sense of stability and self-trust. The approaches listed below are commonly used in trauma treatment and are referenced in the Raised on Shame podcast.

Evidence-Based Trauma Therapies

Some therapies focus on processing traumatic memories, while others emphasize nervous system regulation or understanding the different protective parts of the self. Many clinicians integrate several of these approaches in trauma-informed work.

How these approaches differ

While many trauma therapies share the goal of helping people process difficult experiences and restore a sense of safety, they often focus on different pathways of healing. Some approaches work directly with traumatic memories, others focus on regulating the nervous system and body awareness, and others help people understand the different internal parts that developed to protect them.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy helps people process distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming in the present. Through bilateral stimulation, the brain can integrate experiences that previously felt stuck or unresolved. Learn more

SE

Somatic Experiencing (SE) focuses on how trauma lives in the body and nervous system. This approach helps people gradually restore a sense of safety and regulation through body awareness and gentle nervous system work. Learn more

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a parts-based therapy that helps people understand the different protective and vulnerable parts of themselves that develop through life experiences. The approach focuses on building compassion, internal leadership, and healing wounded parts. Learn more
